Ephesians 5 has sparked more debates than almost any marriage passage in Scripture.

But while many conversations fixate on submission, we often miss something huge:

The bar for husbands is Jesus.

Not culture, comfort, or convenience.

Jesus.

Let’s unpack what that actually means to love your wife like Christ loves the Church, practically.

Husbands: What Does It Really Mean to Love Your Wife Like Christ?

What does it actually mean for husbands to love their wives “as Christ loved the church”? In this episode, we break down one of the most discussed (and often misunderstood) passages in the Bible – Epistle to the Ephesians 5. While many conversations focus on submission, we’re talking about the calling placed on husbands.

📖 What Does Ephesians 5 Say to Husbands?

How to be a godly husband and love your wife like Christ in marriage

In Epistle to the Ephesians 5:25, Paul writes:

“Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.”

That’s not a light calling.

Christ left heaven.

He sacrificed His life.

He sanctified and purified His bride.

If that’s the standard, none of us are “nailing it.”

And that should humble every husband in the (virtual) room.

1. Authority Is Given for Sacrifice — Not Control

When Scripture calls husbands the “head,” it does not mean:

  • Dominate
  • Control
  • “My way or the highway”
  • Passive disengagement

Jesus Himself said the rulers of the Gentiles “lord it over” others — but that is not how His followers lead.

Leadership in Christian marriage looks like:

  • Initiating
  • Taking responsibility
  • Bearing accountability
  • Serving first

Servant leadership turns cultural power upside down.

2. Loving Like Christ Starts With Your Own Walk With God

You cannot love your wife like Christ if you are not pursuing Christ.

That means:

  • Regular time in the Word
  • Prayer (individually and together)
  • Initiating spiritual conversations
  • Cultivating a culture of prayer in the home

A husband’s spiritual health directly impacts the spiritual climate of the home.

3. What Does This Look Like on a Tuesday?

This is where it gets real.

Here are practical examples from this episode:

  • Cleaning the house at night, even when you’d rather veg out
  • Getting up with the kids because your wife struggles to fall back asleep
  • Giving her space to work out or decompress
  • Sacrificing your downtime for intentional quality time
  • Initiating Weekly Marriage Meetings
  • Leading conversations about finances and generosity
  • Starting spiritual conversations with your kids

Christlike love is not theoretical.

It’s built in small, sacrificial decisions.

4. Servant Leadership Is Not Passivity

There are two ditches:

❌ Authoritarian control

❌ Passive disengagement

Biblical leadership avoids both.

Husbands are accountable before God for:

  • The spiritual direction of their family
  • Financial stewardship
  • The health of the marriage
  • The discipleship of their children

That doesn’t mean doing everything.

It means initiating and owning the responsibility.

5. The One-Degree Shift

If you’re a husband listening to this episode, ask yourself:

Where did I feel conviction?

Was it:

  • Spiritual leadership?
  • Serving more intentionally?
  • Initiating conversations?
  • Taking more responsibility?

Don’t overhaul your entire marriage.

Pick one area.

Take one intentional step this week.

That’s the One Degree shift.
